Cordillera Huayhuash

Located in the area where the departments of Ancash, Huanuco, and Lima end; Among its peaks the snow-capped mountain Yerupaja is the most visible (6630masl), the second highest mountain of Peru and one of the most beautiful in the World. With only 30 Km of extension, the Cordillera Huayhuash is home of a variety of flora and fauna including numerous endemic especies of ecosystems of the high Andes.

The skirts of this cordillera is home and refuge for hundreds of peasant communities, who have dedicated themselves since hundreds of years back to agriculture and the raising of animals. Currently, the local inhabitants increase their income providing services to tourists. Each time more visitors come to the region attracted by its cultural and natural richness, and beautiful landscapes where the snow-capped mountains are multiplied as they are reflected in the numerous glacier lakes and streams that cross the forrests and hills. This andean paradise was unknown until recently, because it remained hidden, there were no roads that crossed it, as is the case of the Cordillera Blanca. This has helped to maintain it like a great refuge for the flora and fauna of the place where vicuñas, tarucas and condors still live. Its lakes have an abundant variety of birds and quenual forrests.

Minimum Altitude: 3300 masl

During the entire journey we will observe, even from Chiquián, the steep and dangerous walls of some mountains of the Cordillera de Huayhuash, which have made this Cordillera famous due to their technical difficulties to climb them (Here are found the Siulá grande, 6,344 m. which its West face was conquered for the first time in 1985, but its protagonists, the British Joe Simpson y Simon Yates, portrayed one of the most dramatic descents in the history of alpinism in the world. Their story is well portrayed in the acclaimed book "Tocando el vacío" or Touching the Void, from J.Simpson). We will also observe the difficult Jirishanca (6,094 m.), Rondoy (5,870., Ascended for the first time by the well known Italian alpinist Walter Bonatti), the Yerupajá (6,634 m.) which is the second highest mountain in Peru and one of the least ascended due to its difficulty and the predominantly bad weather of its walls, and an immense quantity of mountains that still remain untouched to the highly experienced alpinists.
QUECHUANDES offers a personalized service all along the entire Huayhuash trek. We count with qualified staff and professional and experienced guides for our journeys, as well as cooks, porters, beasts of burden for the transport of materials and equipment, and complete meals throughout the journey.
